RESOURCES FOR HOME-BASED EDUCATORS

Home educators may wish to access a complete curriculum package, which can be purchased via various online companies (e.g. Exodus Management or Complete Education Australia).

While there are a range of educational resources available from stockists and online repositories, these stand-alone resources usually require the supervising parent to collate and oversee all of the learning activities. This requires a commitment of time and will have out-of-pocket costs.

*We recommend that all teaching resources align with the Australian Curriculum.

Students in a temporary or part-time home-based learning situation should contact their school for information about specific subjects, content and assessment requirements.

Furthermore, we suggest home-based learners follow a routine.

Each day do 30 minute blocks of structured learning.

(Some days might look different depending if the student is showing genuine interest in a particular topic)

Your day could look something like this:

  1. Healthy breakfast and exercise (i.e. physical, hobby and/or meditation)
  2. Reading (quality texts)
  3. Literacy
  4. Sport training
  5. Lunch
  6. Numeracy
  7. Art
  8. Life skills
  9. Snack
  10. Personal interest study
  11. Free time outdoors
  12. Dinner

*If you are not in isolation you may consider doing an educational excursion.

Please note: Students should be doing a range of hands-on and written work with regulated digital technology access.

You should be consistently checking how knowledge is being retained and learnt – every day, every week and every month – If the student forgets the main points in any subject, go over the content again; try using a different approach. This can be fun.

Please note: For senior students on a specific pathway – keep studying, keep working and keep focused on your dreams. It is easy to get side-tracked when you are in a less formal education setting. Self-discipline is the key.

We highly recommend completing projects that involve multiple aspects for learning, for example: research, discussion, planning, innovating, creating, testing and reflection – this is when some subjects can be combined and learning becomes efficient.

REMEMBER: EVERYTHING YOU DO CAN BE A LESSON
